Back-to-school season can be stressful for many kids and their parents. When it comes to back-to-school shopping, many people like the convenience of purchasing these items online. However, it is important to be wary of fake websites or unusual issues with your order. If not cautious when placing orders, becoming the victim of these scams can cost you valuable time and money.*
Protect Yourself Against Online Shopping Scams
- Check refund and return policies, especially on sale or clearance items. Sellers often have different policies for returns and refunds if the items are on sale or clearance. Scammers can use tricky disclosures and fine print to deny refund requests.
- Use a credit card for online purchases, if possible. Credit cards offer the most protection against fraud, including the right to dispute charges if there are problems with your purchase.
- Always save receipts or confirmation emails. These will help you get your money back from the seller or file a dispute with your credit card company.
- Don’t always accept shipping delays. If you don’t receive what you purchased, notify the seller as soon as possible. By law, if you don’t receive the item within a certain promised timeframe, you can cancel an order for a full refund.
- Look for pre-checked boxes. Some businesses use pre-checked boxes hoping you won’t notice agreeing to be billed later.
