QR codes have become more popular because of their convenience. However, they are just as convenient for scammers. “Quishing” or QR Phishing is a new form of phishing that uses QR Codes to lure people to websites that can steal personal information.
How the Scam Works:
- Scammer creates fake QR codes
- Once scanned, takes to spoofed websites
- Website extracts personal or financial information
- Can download malware onto device
- Found in emails or physical locations such as parking meters and restaurants
Avoid Becoming the Victim:
- Be wary of any sense of urgency
- Think twice before giving out personal information after scanning
- Scan with a QR code scanner app to verify
- Look for any signs of tampering
