Identity theft is one of America’s fastest growing crimes. Shredding your personal papers is one of the best ways to protect yourself.
Identity theft is a serious crime. It occurs when your personal information is stolen and used without your knowledge to commit fraud or other crimes. Identity theft can cost you time and money. It can destroy your credit and ruin your good name.
The number of identity theft incidents has reached 9.9 million a year, according to the Federal Trade Commission. According to the federal government, about 7% of individuals over 16 years of age were victims of identity theft in 2014, and 85% of identity theft incidents involved the fraudulent use of existing account information, such as credit card or bank account information. Moreover, financial loss from identity theft nationally reached nearly $25 billion in 2015. Shredding bank statements, bills, and other documents that contain consumers’ information is one easy step that can be taken to help prevent ID theft.
*Event is rain or shine and first come, first served. FMFCU cannot accommodate documents for shredding after trucks fill to capacity. Documents from businesses NOT accepted.
