Broomall, PA - Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union (FMFCU) is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Eight Franklin Mint employees, who worked at the Middletown Township location on U.S. Route One, founded the Credit Union in 1970. After learning more about credit unions from the Pennsylvania Credit Union League and the benefits to Mint employees, the group signed an application for a credit union charter. The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) approved the charter application, and FMFCU opened for business.
At first, the Credit Union started with only one branch at one location (The Franklin Mint), but over the years, grew to include 28 branches (five of which are student-operated inside area high schools) located throughout the Delaware Valley, close to 60,000 members, and nearly $600 million in assets.
Joe Segel, Founder of The Franklin Mint, QVC, Inc. and over a dozen other companies says, “I was glad to support the forming of Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union in 1970. Obviously, I made the right decision. The Credit Union’s growth has been remarkable.”
FMFCU has come a long way from its early days, and the financial world has also changed a great deal over the years. When current President/CEO, John D. Unangst joined FMFCU as a Manager in 1976, he was the third employee, the Credit Union’s asset size was less than $1 million and products, services and technology were very limited.
“It’s hard to imagine by today’s standards, but the only technology we had then were pens, ledger cards and a copy machine,” Unangst says.
Only basic savings accounts and loans were offered. But in 1980 after financial deregulation, the Credit Union was quick to expand its offerings to include checking accounts, Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs), credit cards, Automated Teller Machine (ATM) service and eventually mortgages.
FMFCU continued to add products, services and locations to be “The Credit Union of Choice!” and to validate its Speed, Service and Convenience philosophy. FMFCU is, and always will be an early adopter, and over the years introduced members to telephone banking, a Phone Center (now called a Member Service Center which is open 24/7), one-hour car loan decisions (now, many approvals are done in seconds), a web site, home banking (now called e-Banking), branches with extended hours including Saturday and Sunday hours, access to over 28,000 surcharge-free ATMs nationwide and a high yielding Super Saver savings account to name a few.
Expanding and diversifying the Credit Union’s member base also was an important goal for Unangst. In February 1985, FMFCU opened its first partner-sponsored branch outside The Mint at Riddle Memorial Hospital (which coincidently is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year). Here hospital employees were offered Credit Union membership as part of their benefits package. Then in 1988, the Credit Union opened its first free-standing office in Media. Today, this branch has a unique characteristic—it shares space with a WiFi coffee shop.
“Credit unions were … and still are … an integral part of employee benefit packages. I knew companies could start their own credit unions, and go through all the pain FMFCU did, or they could now join an existing credit union painlessly,” Unangst says.
FMFCU is celebrating its 40th Anniversary in all branch offices through mid May. A special 40th Anniversary web site (www.fmfcu.org/40) was created where visitors can take a fun, short quiz, earn a chance to win an Ipad and receive coupons for special offers.

Media, PA - Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union’s (FMFCU) Riddle Memorial Hospital Branch is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The office, located inside Main Line Health System’s Riddle Memorial Hospital on Baltimore Pike in Media, was FMFCU’s first partner-sponsored branch that provides hospital employees with the convenience of on-site banking.
“We value our 25-year partnership with Riddle Memorial Hospital, and we look forward to continuing our relationship with the hospital, its employees and their families. We extend our thanks and appreciation to Riddle Hospital and Main Line Health’s administration for providing its employees with Credit Union membership as part of its benefit package,” says Dawn Bressler, FMFCU Vice President/District Manager.
”Riddle Hospital is very proud of the 25-year relationship with Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union as a provider of outstanding financial services to our employees right here on our campus. Aside from the banking relationship, we are very grateful for FMFCU’s long history of supporting Riddle Hospital events at significant levels. As well, FMFCU President/CEO John Unangst volunteers his time and talents as a member of The Riddle HealthCare Foundation Board of Directors. Riddle recognizes this great partnership and we look forward to many more productive and constructive years in service to our employees and clients’ needs,” says Gary Perecko, President of Riddle Hospital.
In honor of this milestone, the Credit Union hosted a two-day celebration inviting current hospital employees and former hospital employees who are members of the Credit Union to attend an Appreciation Reception and a Financial Health Fair. During the reception, attendees won on-the-spot prizes, were entered into a drawing for tickets to an upcoming basketball, hockey or baseball game and were offered special promotional loan rates and discounts. The Financial Health Fair provided attendees an opportunity to speak one-on-one with mortgage, investment and insurance representatives to learn what they need to do to get back on, or maintain a healthy financial path.
“Both events were successful, well-received and appreciated by the employees,” says Denice Marburger, FMFCU Riddle Hospital Branch Manager. She adds, “We are pleased to serve the financial needs of Riddle’s employees, and we look forward to doing so in the future.”

Unangst adds, “On behalf of FMFCU’s Board Members and Credit Union staff, I wish Pat continued success in this new position and appreciate his 15 years of service.”
