During a special volunteer recognition ceremony held on Widener University’s campus, FMFCU employees along with other VITA volunteers were thanked for their time in helping to prepare and file returns for Chester residents during tax season.  In addition to tax returns, volunteers also helped with economic stimulus payments.  Credit Union employees who were recognized and thanked included:  Tonia Covington, Upper Darby, who also served as a Site Coordinator; Gloria Mann, Linnwood; Cecily Venkatesh, Swarthmore; Quynh Nguyen, Upper Darby; Tyra Taylor, Wilmington, DE; Laverne King-Stover, Broomall; Carmen Freeman, New Castle, DE and Richard B. Elam, Sr., Lansdowne.

Others recognized during the ceremony were Sara Starr and Nurel Storey, who were tax preparers at FMFCU’s Chester Branch and Sharon Fluellen-Flynn, who coordinated the site at North Chester Baptist Church.

This year, VITA volunteers, all of whom are certified by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) prepared and filed 243 returns free of charge in two locations, the Credit Union’s Chester branch office and at North Chester Baptist Church.  Volunteers prepared and filed returns between January 27 and April 12 for four days totaling 19 hours a week.

“Considering the great demand of taxpayers filing for stimulus payments this year, volunteers did an outstanding job in preparing returns,” says first-year Site Coordinator and FMFCU Crozer-Chester Branch Manager, Tonia Covington.

“I am pleased to report a 62% increase this year in dollars refunded to residents.  Without help from the volunteer tax preparers, FMFCU Chester Branch staff and those at North Chester Baptist Church, we would not have been able to offer this valuable, helpful service to those who really need it,” says FMFCU Vice President and District Manager, John Greskiewicz.

“It’s important that our employees are educated in recognizing the different forms of elder abuse.  We want them to understand and realize that senior citizens can be abused not only physically, but financially too. Each year, the Credit Union holds special training sessions for personnel that cover security and safety issues.  This year, elder abuse was the special session. Employees from our 26 branch offices were educated on elder abuse, and the steps they should take if elder abuse is suspected.  It’s an honor to be recognized for our efforts by the District Attorney’s office,” says Laymen R. Grant, FMFCU Internal Audit Manager.
