Student-Operated Branches

Student Branches

As part of our "Partners in Learning Program", FMFCU embarked on an exciting and unique partnership with select Delaware County School Districts by opening student-operated credit union branches.

High school students literally operate a branch inside their high school under the supervision of FMFCU branch personnel. The on-site branch offers students, faculty, staff and parents a full service financial institution where they can deposit funds, open free savings and checking accounts and apply for loans. In addition, the schools have an FMFCU ATM for cash withdrawals. The school branch is open to those who normally have access to the school.

This initiative was developed by FMFCU to enhance its Community Education Program with three major objectives in mind: to provide teens with real-life personal finance skills, job training and overall financial literacy for the entire student body.

The first student-operated branch was opened during the 2004-2005 school year at Interboro High School. Springfield High School and Upper Darby High School branches opened during the 2005-2006 school year. Penn Wood High School and Strath Haven High School branches opened during the 2006-2007 school year.

FMFCU Student-Operated Branches feature the following:

  • Student-operated branches are true business laboratories that operate on school campuses
  • Increased opportunities for financial literacy education
  • Students learn how financial institutions operate
  • Students act as employees of the credit union and operate and market the in-school branch
  • Students experience and develop crucial social skills, and work-life skills
  • Opportunities for full-time and summer employment for student employees
  • High school students, faculty, and staff have the convenience of an on-site financial institution that promotes saving for the future
  • Students participate in financial education activities in various district schools
