Savings Bonds

Savings Bonds are a great way for both adults and kids to save money. Some companies even make purchasing them part of a payroll deduction.

EE Bonds are reliable, low-risk government-backed savings products that you can use toward financing education, supplemental retirement income, birthday and graduation gifts, and other special events*. You can purchase them in denominations of $50, $75, $100, $200, $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000. They are sold to you at half their face value. For example, if you want a $1,000 bond, you pay $500 and then over the course of time, your interest accrues until it matures.

You can redeem bonds anytime, but in the first five years, you'll forfeit the three most-recent months' interest. If you redeem after five years, you won't be penalized.
